Betty Louise Selders, 92, passed away on Saturday (December 4, 2021) and her husband of seventy-three years, James “Jim” David Selders, 92, passed away three days later on Tuesday (December 7, 2021).
Betty was born February 11, 1929 in Aliquippa PA, daughter of Ray and Mae (Wycoff) Nelson.
Jim was born October 10, 1929 in Byesville, the only son of Elmer J. and Marjorie (Evans) Selders.
Jim and Betty were high school sweethearts, graduating from Byesville High School in 1947. They were married on March 25, 1948.
The couple was nearly inseparable; the greatest length of time apart was when Jim served during the Korean War. Jim entered the United States Army on February 19, 1952 and was honorably discharged February 11, 1954.
In 1995, Jim and Betty relocated to Grand Island to be near their daughter’s family.
The couple was preceded in death by their parents; a grandson, James “Jim” Coulombe, who passed away in 2007; and Jim’s two sisters, Laura Christian and Joyce Schina.
Those who cherish their memory include their daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Russel Helton of Grand Island; and their grandson, Ryan (Kelli) Helton.
Graveside services will be held at Greenwood Cemetery, Byesville, on Thursday (October 6, 2022) at 1 p.m., with military honors conducted by the Guernsey County Veterans Council.
