Charles R. (Whitey) Patchen, 88, of Byesville passed away Friday (August 28, 2021) at the Cambridge Place.
Charles was born September 15, 1932 in Trail Run (Robins, OH) and was the son of the late Nicholas and Mary (Repasky) Patchen.
Whitey was a 1950 graduate of Byesville High School, attended the Ohio State University, was an Army Veteran of the Korean War, and retired from the Ohio Department of Transportation where he was a mechanic. Years ago, a non-functioning WWII airplane was brought to Byesville School for people to see. Someone called Whitey, and on a dare he was able to get the plane running again! This was an accomplishment he was well known for! He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #654 and attended Christ the Savior Orthodox Church in Byesville. He enjoyed hunting, family, celebrating his Slovak culture, and helping others work on their cars.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three brothers, John, Mickey, and infant brother, Nick; five sisters, Helen Murphy, Mary Baldridge, Pauline Rohrich, Olga Cox, Erma Hatton and two infant sisters, Anna and Mary. One grandson, Justin Selock is deceased.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Marty) Patchen, whom he married February 5, 1955; four daughters, Penny (Tom) Selock of Zanesville (Justin & Ashley Selock); Pam (Mike) Lewis of Zanesville (Joel & Lauren & Jess & Marla); Paula (Eric) Graham-Stoldt of Byesville (Jeremy & Chelsee, Jake, Jason & Alicia, Ethan and Caden); and Patti Jo (Matt) Gilligan of Delaware (Caroline & Brady Gilligan); ten grandchildren; ten great grandchildren (Barrett, Odin, & Arigyn Graham, Maylee, Jolie, Anderson Charles, & Ellis Graham, James, Isabelle, & Robbie East; his sister Rosella Urdak of Byesville and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Monday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Black-Epperson Funeral Home, Byesville with services to follow at 5:00 p.m.
