Flavil Miller Obituary

 

Cambridge- Flavil Reed Miller, 93, went to his home in heaven on Friday, May 7, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Beech Grove on December 27, 1927, son of John Earl and Lela (LaFollette)  Miller. He was a gospel minister for more than 60 years, preaching at Churches of Christ at Gomber Avenue, Millersburg, Newcomerstown, Fairview, Pisqua, and Marathon in the Keys. He was a graduate of Ohio Valley University and the President and founder of CRSE, a creation research organization. Flavil’s hobbies were hunting, fishing, golfing, photography, woodworking, coin finding and playing music.

     In 1944, Flavil embarked on a radio career as an entertainer at WWVA Jamboree in Wheeling, W.Va. He performed with such country music greats as Doc and Chickee Williams, Honey and Sonny Davis, Roy Clark, Jimmy Dean, Toby Stroud and many more. In 1983, he formed a local country music band called “The Get-Along Gang.”  The group entertained Senior Citizen’s groups and other special events in the area. About ten years ago, he played at the Amish Theater for five years with the band Salt Creek, Inc., entertaining audiences with several performances a week.   Flavil was a master craftsman making 21 violins, one viola, one mandolin, one cello and two guitars.

    Preceding him in death are his parents, his first wife, Ramona Miller, a daughter, Sondra Marlene and a son Gary Flavil Miller, two brothers, Forest and Glen Miller, and three sisters, Mildred Work, Evelyn Everly and Carmie Green.

     Flavil is survived by his wife of 39 years, Verna (Hite) Miller, whom he married February 5, 1982, two daughters Marca (Larry) Porter, Mona (Mark) Stoffer, a son Bruce Allen Miller, daughter-in-law Debbie Miller, five stepdaughters Nicki Gordon, Jamy (Bob) D’Arezzo, Robin (Dave) Stout, Heidi Riley, and Wendy Fleagane. He leaves 14 beloved grandchildren: Fawn (Perry) Filippis, Brett (Lori) Porter, Ty Stoffer, Ashley (Toby) Waggoner, Gretchen (Dave) Chaffin, Ellie (Perry) Erb, Nathan Miller, Randi Taylor, Noah (Cyndie) Taylor, Nick (Sarah) Moore, Jennifer (Derek) Diehl, Erin (Joey) Delloma, Adam (Megan) Stout and Bethany (Brandon) Moore. Flavil also leaves several great-grandchildren: Andrew & Jovi Filippis, Taylor Stoffer, Cole, Kami and Karli Porter, Kacey, Zachary, Abbigail and Anna Waggoner, Maggie and Zephaniah Erb, Nathan Chaffin, Quentin Stora, Mia and Matthew Taylor, Alexander and Dominick Moore, Kade and Kohl Clark, Mary Grace, Andrew and Madalynn Stout, Cooper, Hudson and Harper Moore.

    Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 12, 2021, at the Stop 9 Church of Christ. Calling hours are 11:00 -2:00 with the funeral following at 2:00 p.m., with evangelist Roger Rush officiating. The burial will be at the Buffalo Cemetery immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ohio Valley University, 1 Campus View Drive, Vienna, WV 26105-8000.
