Helen Gaye McElwee Gregg, 106, relocated to Heaven on November 24, 2022. She was born to Adoniram Judson and Elizabeth (Hunnell) McElwee in Hartford, Ohio on January 22, 1916 and grew up on a farm beside Salt Fork Creek, what is now Salt Fork Lake, in Jefferson Township, Guernsey County. She was a long time resident of Cambridge, Ohio where she worked at the Cambridge Pottery and retired from the Guernsey County Library.
Her faith in God was readily seen and she was, and will continue to be, a positive influence to those with whom she had contact. She was a mentor, encourager, and had a gift for making a person feel as they were the most special person in the world. She was a member of “The Biddies” at Pine Court Apartments; a charter member of the Celtic Society of Southeast Ohio, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Military Order of the Purple Heart; a member of the Genealogical Society of Guernsey County, of First Families of Guernsey County, the Valley Grange, an active member of the Stop 9 Church of Christ, and of the Golden 60’s. She helped establish the Genealogical Department at the Guernsey County Library. She enjoyed cooking and baking, especially for guests and family, traveling, and reading.
She was married to Charles Lester Gregg for nearly 70 years, who was waiting for her in Heaven.
She was preceded in death by siblings, Lester McElwee, Emma (McElwee) Tedrick, Wayne McElwee and Elizabeth Ruth (McElwee) Holmes.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Anderson; grandsons, Scott Fitzgerald, Mark Fitzgerald, and Patrick Ward; great-grandchildren, Brad Fitzgerald, Julie (Fitzgerald) Furxhi, Tyler Fitzgerald, Cassidy (Ward) Daye, Nathan Ward, and Bridget Ward; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Wednesday (November 30, 2022) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Stop Nine Church of Christ, Byesville, where funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. with Evang. Woody Biggs and Evang. Mark Beros officiating.
Burial will be at Old Washington Cemetery.
Helen asked that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the Youth Group at Stop 9 Church of Christ (60330 Southgate Road, Byesville OH 43723) or to Hospice of Guernsey, Inc. (PO Box 1165, Cambridge OH 43725).
