Herbert Franklin Gerdau, 60, of Senecaville, passed away at his home on Thursday (May 4, 2023) after a valiant battle with cancer.
He was born April 13, 1963 in Cambridge, son of Betty (Evans) Gerdau and the late James Gerdau.
Herbert attended Cambridge High School and retired in 2021 after twenty-seven years at Detroit Diesel.
He was a member of the Warthogs Motorcycle Club. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, woodworking, hunting & fishing, and gun collecting. He operated Progressive Tactical of Pleasant City with his partner, Mark Baker, offering concealed carry training for many in the area.
Herbert was a US Army veteran, having served from 1980 to 1991.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy; a sister, Mary; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Annette Taylor; and a brother-in-law, Allan Skeslock.
Herbert is survived by his wife, Margaret “Marge” (Taylor) Neff Gerdau, whom he married July 25, 2009; his mother, Betty Gerdau of Cambridge; two sons, Herbie Gerdau of Cambridge and Andrew Gerdau of Roseville; a daughter, Kristy (Caleb) Raymond of Cambridge; a stepson, James (Whitney) Neff of Cambridge; a brother, Harry (Diane) Gerdau of Middletown; two sisters, Terri (Bob) Schuetz of Beckley WV and Becky Skeslock of Pleasant City; eleven grandchildren; several nieces & nephews; a brother-in-law, Richard (Margaret) Taylor of Knoxville; two sisters-in-law, Anne (Malcolm) Worth of Xenia and Rosemary (Rick) Burkhead of Senecaville; his close friends, Mark Baker and Clint Clary; and his beloved dogs, Maxxie and Cindy.
Visitation will be held Wednesday (May 10, 2023) from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Black-Epperson Funeral Home, Byesville, where funeral services will follow at 5 p.m. with military honors conducted by the Guernsey County Veterans Council.
Burial will be at Northwood Cemetery, Cambridge, at a later date.
As an expression of sympathy, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Herbert’s name to the Cambridge Cancer Center, 1410 Clark Street, Cambridge OH 43725.
