Mary Hammond, 90, of Columbus and formerly of Byesville, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2022.
Mary was born April 18, 1932 in Cambridge, Ohio and was the daughter of Bertha and Ambrose Yakubisin. She graduated from Byesville High School in 1950. She married Jim Hammond on July 15, 1950 and they spent 50 wonderful years together before Jim passed away on August 3, 2000.
She worked at Ramage Royal Blue in the 1950s through the 1970s. She was a past member of Alpha Pi Sigma Sorority, Phi Chapter. She and Jim owned and operated Hammond’s Drive-In for ten years. In 1979, she became a cook for Meadowbrook High School and was promoted to Cafeteria Director for the Rolling Hills Local School District where she remained until her retirement in 1996. After retirement, she and her son, David became vendors at Country Bits in Cambridge and still have a space there.
Her parents, her husband, and her daughter-in-law, Amy Rozmus Hammond precede her in death.
Left to cherish her memory are; her three children, Jim (Amy) Hammond of Virginia Beach, VA, David (Beverly) Hammond of Columbus, OH and Barbara (Kent) Jones of Spokane, WA; her sister, Helen (Ed) Hamilton of Dalzell, SC; her sister-in-law, Elaine (Carl) King of Cumberland, OH; her uncle, George (Wanda) Krupar of Cambridge, OH; her three grandchildren, Leah (Tom) Wells of London, UK, Luke Hammond of Virginia Beach, VA, and Melanie Jones of Spokane, WA; three great-grandchildren, Maybelle, Elsbeth, and Cecily; and 11 nieces and nephews.
She was Catholic by faith. Her greatest joy in life was her family and the sacrifices she made for them. She was an avid sports fan, rooting for The Ohio State Buckeyes, Cincinnati Reds, Columbus Blue Jackets, Oklahoma City Thunder, and anywhere her son, Jim coached. She loved making floral arrangements, attending craft shows, cooking, putting puzzles together with her family, and bringing joy to others.
Visitation with friends and family will be held Sunday (JANUARY 15, 2023) from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Black-Epperson Funeral Home, Byesville. Private burial will be at Northwood Cemetery, Cambridge, at a later date.
