Mary Joan (Lighty) McElroy

**SERVICE UPDATE**  A celebration of life for James Lee and Mary Joan McElroy will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday (October 7, 2023) at the McElroy Home located at 9903 Roller Road, Byesville.  Military honors will be conducted by the Guernsey County Veterans Council.

Mary Joan McElroy, 86, of Byesville, passed away Tuesday (January 31, 2023).

Mary was born November 16, 1936 in Newcomerstown, daughter of the late Alice (Wynn) Walcott and Harry Lighty.  Mary was raised in Cambridge and attended Cambridge City Schools.  She always loved her “Bobcats”.

On Tuesday March 16th 1954, she married the love of her life – James L. McElroy.  They went on to have three children: Bobby Lee McElroy, Connie Joan McElroy, and James Allen McElroy.

Mary retired from the Cambridge State Hospital in 1996.  She never stopped talking about the love she had for her clients.

Mary loved to cook, garden, and spend time with her grandchildren.

In addition to her father and mother, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Everett Walcott; her sister, Martha Belle; her brother, Thomas Lighty; her daughter-in-law, Traci McElroy; and two grandsons, Clint Cornette and Shawn McElroy.

Mary is survived by her husband, James McElroy; her children, Bob McElroy, Connie McElroy, and James (Laverne) McElroy; four grandchildren, Jamie (Justin) Moore, Bryan (Angela) McElroy, Jorge Octavio (Nyda) Lazoya, and Michael Olivas; and many great-grandchildren & great-great-grandchildren.

No calling hours will be observed.  No funeral services will be held at this time.
