Melvin "Buzz" McHenry Obituary

After a long, courageous battle, Melvin (Buzz) Wesley McHenry, age 78, of Cambridge, succumbed to cancer surrounded by his family at his home on March 18, 2021.

Born April 11, 1942 in Byesville, Ohio, he was the son of the late Carl Wesley and Carrie Cornelius (Nunley) McHenry.

Melvin graduated from Byesville High School in 1960, and then enlisted in the United States Army in 1962. Melvin served 6 years in the U.S. Military, including 3 years active in Korea following the Korean War, and 3 years in the Army Reserves. After his time served, Melvin accepted a job in Electrical Production for General Electric, where he retired. 

Melvin never met a stranger, everywhere he went people knew who he was. He served as a part of the Byesville Police Auxiliary, and was a long-time member of the VFW Post #3760 in Byesville, Ohio. He was a great mechanic, and anytime anyone had an issue with their vehicle, he was the man to call. Melvin loved sports, if you were ever to stop by for a visit, he would surely be there watching Nascar-racing, Pittsburg Steelers Football, the Cleveland Indians, or Ohio State Buckeyes! He spent evenings watching Westerns and listening to Country music, as he himself was very talented with. Melvin was an avid bass guitar player, playing for many bands, including; The Johnny and Nancy Reagan Band, Judy and The Good Sounds Band, Bob Michael and The Ghost Riders, and was invited to share the stage with Porter Wagner in the midst of his music journey.

Melvin is survived by his long-time companion, Marsha (Savage) McHenry of 37 years, 5 beloved children; daughters, Kathy Marlatt Church, Christine Bates, Tiffany (Tony) Addy, Christina McHenry (Eugenio) Campa, and son, Cary McHenry, 12 grandchildren; Bobbie Law, David Marlatt, Michelle Marlatt, Kolen Watson, John Wesley McHenry, Celia Bates, Robert Bates, Deakon Ames, Abigail Campa, Isabel Campa, Bria McHenry and Kyden McHenry, 10 great-grandchildren; Ryann Law, Jaydah Marlatt, Mackenzie Marlatt, Joshua Tuck, Jacob Bannister, Gunnar Marlatt, Janessa Tuck, Aleena Law, Quinton Law, and Kurtis Hill. Also surviving; sister,  Janet Redd, sister-in-law, Jackie McHenry, special niece, Brenda Starinsky.

Melvin is preceded in death by a daughter, Carla (McHenry) Jackson, a son, John Wesley McHenry, sisters, Margie (McHenry) Abrams, Besse (McHenry) Eubanks, Elizabeth Irene (McHenry) Mallett, Bonnie (McHenry) Duddy, Dolores (McHenry) Williamson, Linda (McHenry) White, brother, Arliss McHenry, and beloved dog, Sammy.

Calling hours for Melvin will be held Monday from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Black-Epperson Funeral Home in Byesville where funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Mark Slay officiating. Guernsey County Veterans Council will provide military rites following the service.                 

Burial will be held in Guernsey Memory Gardens at a later date.
